When an industrial automation retrofit makes sense

A practical overview of when to repair, rebuild or retrofit industrial equipment instead of replacing the complete machine.

A retrofit can extend the useful life of mechanically sound equipment when the control system, drives, safety hardware or operator interface has become unreliable or obsolete.

Typical triggers include discontinued PLC hardware, recurring electrical faults, poor diagnostics, lack of spare parts, production changes or the need to connect previously standalone machines into a larger process.

A good retrofit starts with an audit of the machine, electrical documentation, I/O, safety functions, drive system and production requirements. The scope can then be divided into repair, replacement, programming, commissioning and documentation tasks.

For international projects, clear photographs, current schematics, PLC backups, part numbers and a concise description of the fault or required process change help the engineering team evaluate the job before travelling to site.
