Machine vision for wood quality inspection

How industrial machine vision can support wood and timber inspection for dimensions, presence, orientation, surface features, grading and traceability.

Wood is a challenging inspection material because grain, knots, colour, texture and natural variation are part of the product. A successful vision system therefore needs a clearly defined inspection objective and controlled imaging conditions.

Good candidates for automated inspection

  • Presence and orientation of boards or components.
  • Width, length, edge position and dimensional checks.
  • Drilled, milled or assembled feature confirmation.
  • Printed code, label or product identification verification.
  • Surface anomalies where defect contrast can be defined reliably.

Lighting is critical

Natural wood variation can hide defects or create false contrast. Lighting angle, polarization, wavelength, background and camera position may matter more than increasing camera resolution.

Line presentation must be controlled

Product overlap, vibration, changing distance or uncontrolled rotation can reduce repeatability. Mechanical presentation, triggering and encoder information should be designed as part of the inspection station.

Inspection should connect to the process

A result becomes useful when it can trigger sorting, rejection, rework, grade assignment or traceability—not simply display an image.

Before specifying hardware, collect representative good and defective samples across the real product range.
