What information is needed before a PLC retrofit project?

A practical checklist of machine, PLC, HMI, I/O, drive and production information that helps scope an industrial control retrofit.

Machine and process information

Provide the machine manufacturer, model, approximate year, product/process description, required cycle time and the operational problems that are driving the project.

Automation hardware

Photograph PLC CPUs, I/O modules, HMI panels, drives, safety controllers, network switches and important device nameplates. Exact order numbers are more useful than manufacturer names alone.

Software and documentation

Existing PLC/HMI source files, electrical drawings, manuals, parameter backups and network lists can significantly reduce discovery work. State clearly if these are missing.

Required changes

Separate mandatory requirements from desirable improvements: obsolete hardware replacement, new product formats, additional sensors, better diagnostics, remote access, traceability or integration with other equipment.

Shutdown and commissioning constraints

The available production shutdown window strongly affects retrofit strategy. Identify when installation can occur, whether offline testing is possible and what production acceptance criteria must be met.
